  1. Hey Tom, late to the party but have a become a massive fan of yours and already getting a ton out of your advice and incredible playing. In addition to being a lifelong guitarist, I’m also an advanced tennis player and have a question that relates. In tennis, as you are getting better, you can string the racquet with MORE tension when we are less advanced because it offer more control, where pros can go way down in tension and get more pop on the ball. As for string sets, do you advise a player without your hand strength to use a string set with less tension, say 9’s if you want to be able to bend and vibrato effectively, but maybe lack some tone? Is it really whatever works or should I be aiming to just grin and bear it. Thanks in advance if you care to answer. ~Lance

  2. Hi Tom,

Love the show, it reminds me of how YouTube used to be, no begging anything just sharing stuff for sake of it. Please never change, when Uncle Larry says please hit the subscribe button it’s the end of days!

Anyway I believe I have a great idea, maybe you did this already, unfortunately been too busy to go through all the homeskoolin saga, if I have time for YouTubing though, your the first guy I check out. Don’t really follow anyone else either to be honest.

The idea; How about homeskoolers do homeskoolin episodes, and you’ll pick out one or two that you feel like you learned something. I mean I know your way past “learning new stuff”, but for real badass players such as your self, there’s always new ways to look at things. For example in one episode you were talking about having sus4 and third in a same chord, I never looked it like that before, I was just seeing it as boring ass add11. Now I look at that chord differently and use it in a different way. There was videos where people were acting like you, they were funny as hell – I’m talking about ‘serious’ content though. Give a chance for people to show their secret tricks. All the best – Jukka

  3. Hey Tom, I just watched your Homeschoolin’ vid with the little Harvard. Sounding good man! Now that you are a Harvard fan….
I just finished a 12 watt STEREO prototype version of the very rare ‘62 Harvard 6G10 with variable NFB and Stereo TRS line out. Wondering if you would be interested in demo-ing it. I live in M’Boro and could drop by with it at your convenience. Would love to get your comments on sound and build. Let me know if you are at all interested. Thx

  4. Hey Uncle Larry, do you have a recommendation for backing tracks or loops. Or it is the best make them for myself? Hope you know what I mean

  5. Just grateful to have you on the internet, Larry — especially in times like these when it’s full of assholes. Thanks for the great content, the bench videos, and all that stuff! It constantly makes my day while I’m sitting at my day job trying to figure out how to get back on tour playing original music professionally again. Kind of the same shit your guys THE CLIFFS are going through. Have a cold one, mate!

  6. Uncle Larry! What is your address to send swag? I can’t find the episode where you give your PO Box. We made you a tshirt that I know you will love. Sent you an email with a picture.

  7. Hey Uncle Larry! I was curious, if you had to choose between steel and brass saddles for a tele which do you prefer?

  8. Dear Uncle Larry, what if someone comes in with a song and it’s a real turd? Can it ever be polished? Do you slog through it to get it done or is it ever appropriate for someone say, ‘That’s an ugly baby.’ When do you say when?

    Thank you.

    John Carlson

  9. Hi Tom, how about a class on the moods of chords and when / how to use them in progressions to tell a story with music?

  10. Hi Tom!

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you and the talent you share with all of us. Your Homeskoolin’ videos played a huge role in helping me get through the last two years.

I’ve been battling stage 4 cancer, and I had two heart attacks within just a few weeks of each other, right when I was first diagnosed. I couldn’t play guitar for six months. When I finally started again, I found it a real struggle to do the things I used to do.

Music has been the biggest thing that has kept me alive. The very first thing I do every morning is grab a coffee and check to see if you’ve posted a new video.

After watching you almost daily all this time, I’ve noticed some of your style creeping into my playing. I’ve also seen you reach out to other professional guitarists and ask how they played certain things for your son to learn.

So I figured I would be brave and ask you for the same kind of help.

Would you mind showing me how you played the intro to Down To My Last Bad Habit? I’m assuming that was you. It sounds exactly like something you would play. That’s my all-time favorite Vince Gill song, partly because of the guitar work on it.

Thanks so much, man. Love ya, brother.

    Gary Alexander

  11. Hey Tom, love Homeskoolin’ and your amazing playing. was just curious what u think the best reverb pedal is and what you recommend for someone who is unable to purchase something like the Ebo

  12. Hey Tom , got my first chance to listen to Plexi soul driving home from rehearsal. Soooo good! Only had a short hop home but drove around for an hour listening. That doesn’t happen often.
    Fall is herecheers mike

  13. Two thoughts: (1.) As someone who use to hang out in the local music shop as a young teenager in the 80s, this channel “hits the spot”. It’s like listening to the best musician in town sharing that wisdom. (When knowledge was closer to “magic” than it was “0s and 1s” on the information superhighway.) And (2.) I recently heard you playing some Motels on a video. If you haven’t, you should look up one of their recent live performances on youtube. 70-something Martha Davis still sounds AWESOME, up there rocking a guitar while looking like someone’s cool grandma!

    • I still have the cassette with “Only The Lonely” on it, from back in the day when it was forst released. Yes, Uncle Larry fits that bill perfectly. I can hear him doing that beautiful melodic solo.

  14. greetings, uncle larry!
may i inquire what is your favourite fender amp and why?
i also want to extend to you my sincerest gratitude for all the hundreds of hours of entertainment, musical education and philosophical musings you have provided us with, they enrich my life and inspire me to play and listen to music.
all the best, lauri from finland.

  15. Hi Tom, I enjoy your restring a maintenance videos. There’s always helpful tips from you. How did you arrive upon 10’s for electric and 13’s over 12’s for acoustic guitars of recent – surely you’ve had a journey of many gauges?
I’ve found acoustics are tone before comfort – electrics seems to have potential for comfort before tone as you can shape slightly, but would you agree?
    Thanks for the wisdom.

  16. Hey Larry. The Jim Irsay collection is going to auction. In your time hanging with him, did you ever get a chance to play any of those iconic guitars? Gilmour’s Black Strat, “The Fool” SG? etc. What are your thoughts?

  17. Always like gordon mote very interesting fellow love the hammond B3 recent video. Thanks for all you share. By the way I know someone who has a portable hammond B3 .Don’t see them much . It is for sale.

  18. Hey Tom: If you were in a cover band playing in your typical bar, what would your first two sets look like?

    • Hey, Larry! Fellow Ohioan here. North Columbus bred, born and raised by way of a long line of Appalachian White Trash. I just watched the video from a few days ago talking about your drive down the Natchez Trace to Muscle Shoals. Brought back great memories of a motorcycle trip I took in the fall of 2014. I just disappeared for two weeks on the bike as I rode to Nashville, picked up the Trace, and spent a few days riding all 444 miles stopping to see the sights. I fueled up in little towns, had my meals at the counters of Mom and Pop diners, kicked around Tupelo (love that town) and Jackson Mississippi. Once I hit Natchez I headed north on Hwy 61 and wound up in Clarksdale, MS. Quite the trip for music obsessed guitar hack from the Buckeye state. Two weeks and 2000 miles later I arrived back home with a load of stories, a bunch of new friends and great memories. Thanks for helping bring them back to mind and making me smile.

  19. Hi Tom, thanks so much for all the cool videos! We actually met some years ago at 2nd gear. I bought a newer R7 Goldtop from you.

I’m starting to poke around for my first vintage guitar. Something from Gibson, most likely pre 65 with the wider nut if I can. I know you sell some pretty awesome stuff from time to time. Is there a mailing list or anything I can get on to make sure I don’t miss that stuff when it comes up?

    Thanks again man.

  20. Hi Tom,
I have a question about a double neck Gibson that a seller on Reverb has for sale and says he has it on “good authority” that you once owned this guitar. CS100123 is the serial number. It has DEMO stamped into the 6 string headstock. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. If there is any documentation you may have kept for it over the years, if this was indeed yours, would you be willing to send? Take care and have a great Christmas and New Year.

  21. Hey Tom…I am driving to Nashville from just north of Dallas (Wichita Falls) on Dec 27…could possibly bring something to ya….(I am on Facebook, Spotify, etc..if you want to check me out first..I would…lol)
    Thanks,
    Casey Pilgreen

  22. Hey Tom! I just watched your easy eye vid. I’m driving to Dallas to visit family for Christmas and driving back up early Jan. Give me a shout if it’s any help at all to bring back something. hah, love the vids man!
