  1. Hey Tom, i remember a while back you said something about old Gibson amps and a certain model you wanted. I found a 50s Gibson GA-30 in a guitar shop. Are those any good? Love your channel! I watch your videos everyday on my lunch break.

  2. Hi Tom. Thanks for sharing your playing and stories on your Homeskoolin channel. I enjoy my regular checkins.

I imagine that your playing has evolved many times since you first started playing at your Mom’s bar in Cleveland. Can you tell us if you recall any key milestones or pivotal points in your evolution as a guitar player? Moments when you think your playing style changed or when you noticed a clear elevation of your ability. What would you say led to the change? Thanks.

    • Three decades of hard core session work will “evolve” anyone’s playing my friend. the thing about studio work is that it FORCES you to focus on fundamentals and it MAKES you work on the mundane things you would never practice at home by yourself for fun.

The studio puts a giant microscope on every weakness you didn’t even know you had. It will break you down to the very core of your existence and make you question yourself and your career choices more than anything you will ever experience.

  3. Hey Uncle Larry,

I really enjoyed your setup videos. I have a question about how you approach sticky nuts……….

What do you do when pencil lead doesn’t work? I’m terrified to file my nuts. Are there other correct and safe ways to make the “behind the nut” test work?

    Thanks!

  4. The worst vintage pickups are the early 80’s “elite” tele pickups. They looked like pre lace sensors.

  5. Hi Tom. Thanks for a great channel. Lot’s to learn! I have a Fender Strat of the affordable kind – highway one HSS (2007) Quite happy with it even if some Strat purists gets offended by the humbucker:-) I can’t spend golden age/vintage money, but I’d like to give Gibson a go. Would you recommend a 335, Les Paul or an SG to start my Gibson journey. What would you do if you had 2-3 grand to spend on a guitar?

  6. Uncle Larry,

    Greetings from Cincinnati.

Have you seen the music documentary “The Immediate Family” yet? Would love to hear your thoughts on it and those in it, especially since you talked about working with Waddy when you were replacing him in Joe Walsh’s touring band.

  7. Hi!

My husband turns 30 years old in June and he is a huge fan of yours. We both started watching your videos during Covid. He loves your channel and has learned so much from you. He is feeling a little bummed about turning 30, so I wanted to reach out to see if you would be able to write him a little birthday message and share any wisdom about the guitar. He is incredibly passionate about guitar and music in general.

I appreciate you reading this. Thank you!

  8. Hey Tom, thanks for a great show.

Curious to hear your thoughts on NOS instruments vs the real ones they’re intended to emulate.

I’ve never played an authentic Telecaster built before 1970 but I’ve recently enjoyed playing Fender’s recent American Vintage 2 Telecaster at my local store.

As someone with lots of history with vintage instruments what’s it like for you when you pick up a NOS and play?

Does it feel good, or like a fake and make you just want something where technology and quality are more the priority?

    Thanks!
    David

  9. The substance of your lesson today about band guys vs. studio guys was great but theres a low hum in the video that my speakers accentuated so badly it made my head wanna burst! I survived. first world problems here.

  10. Wondering whether Danny Gatton was/is as mind blowing to you as he was to us mere mortals? I got his Hot Licks videos many decades ago with the best intention of learning some of his stuff, but ended up giving up and just watching slack-jawed. His musical explorations were extraordinary. The redneck jazz stuff with Buddy Emmons was out there. Some of your chord transitions remind me of his stuff from time to time. I know Vince Gill got to play with him. I think it was some of the Nashville cats who named him The Humbler, just wondering what your take is.

    • danny was a bad boy…amazing player and true musicologist….he would have made a terrible session player but who cares?…certainly not him

  11. Morning uncle Larry from (getting warmer UK). I wrote in a while ago Ref: Grimshaw Guitars. You said you had not heard of them. Any joy, Have you managed to get your sticky paws on one yet?
Anyhow…Another question: Have you ever swapped out a vintage pickup and and put in a newer version of the same guitar and to see if it comes up close to the original(Sound wise)?
Say… a guitar such as LP junior. For shits and giggles, just to see how far apart they are. Then change maybe bridge, pots blah blah, easy parts that are in budget for the normal Joe. I went to a guitar ware house place last week to try out some LP Juniors. On the wall was an old one, I said to the guy can I play that and compare it to the £3k + replica I am looking to buy. He said “no”, unless I can prov I have £50K in my bank to cover any damages. What a prick! How are you meant to know what you are getting if you not even aloud to touch the original, sound wise or feel wise. I thought foooook you it’s just a guitar (I get the vintage thing blah, blah). I left with no guitar. Anyway, that’s 2pence worth :-). Be good pal, keep rocking and keep your mince pie’s out for an old Grimshaw. Cheers Trev

        • I got a Coffee cup that says “UNT” in black lettering with the handle painted black to make the “C”. I laugh every time i take a sip. One of the greatest words ever.

  12. What’s your take on the B league football? About to start uncle Larry? I know it’s a gap filler but is it really?

  13. Hi Uncle Larry, Tommy. I love your YouTube channel, watch all the time. I live in Illinois and visit TN a few times a year. I am seeking to network in TN for a variety of reasons. I book, promote, produce, write, play etc and am looking to just meet some folks in town to just learn. I have solid yet small business here in NW Illinois booking, promoting performing as well. Club owners, studios owners, agents, promoters, anything you might recommend I would appreciate it very much. Thank you, Joe

    • get to know ron brice, the guy that owns 3rd and lindsley….he’s a great dude, a dear old friend. he can help you

  14. Tom…Question I MUST Know.. recent episode ‘Fresh Out Da Bed’as you riffed on the Junior..the lil amp you use ..What is IT?? So awesome and you can hear that sweet spot singing sustain near breakup. Even while you played passages, the open notes were just Amazing sustain (no unwanted feedback at all)even when you volume down the guitar, it still sings.. from an Old..er self taught Rocker, love every aspect of your episodes, can never get enough of Homeskoolin. (dig the morning ‘Rocker’ hair by the way lol) Charles

  15. Hi Buko; What is a good insurance company to insure musical instruments with .Guitars, Amps mainly. Some vintage. Also wanted to thank you for referring me to the Ann Wilson show at Wakken. Great demo of the Duesenburg alliance model. It helped me make a decision to order one. Thanks for all you share with us.Great information.

  16. Hello Larry, I have a question. (Actually 2)
When you do a session, how long does take before the product hits shelves?
PT 2: Do you ever get a copy of the album/cd at release date?

    • sometimes months….sometimes years…they will occasionally send a finished record if they are really proud of it

  17. Hey Tommy B! Hope you’re well. Any news tricks for an old dog. 50 yr old who has been playing with piss poor technique for about 25 yrs. Too tense, squeeze too hard. Asking for a friend.

  18. Why was the harmonica player found wondering around in the back yard? He couldn’t find the key and didn’t know when to come in…6 string banjo..uses and info? Who played 6 string banjo on OLD MAN by Neil Young?

  19. Hello Tom! Are there “relic’d” drum kits? Is that a thing? I just pulled mine out of storage and the chrome needed serious help and this thought occurred to me for the first time.
    Love the channel
    Cheers,
    Kyle in Albania

    • i have never seen it…but i’m sure somebody does it…but maybe not, most drummers like their drums to be clean

  20. Larry, I just started playing guitar for John PayCheck, I’m going to be going on the road with him this summer. I was curious if you ever crossed paths with his dad, Johnny. I’m a massive fan of yours, and everytime he tells story’s I’m always asking his band if anyone is friends with Uncle Larry!

Thanks for all you do for us, much love from Baltimore
